Winter Solstice 2018

In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there's something stronger – something better, pushing right back.” Albert Camus

The Winter Solstice is traditionally a time to hibernate and enjoy the fruits of the harvest spiritually, emotionally, physically and mentally. It is a time to celebrate with friends, family and within our communities being aware that it can also be tinged with sadness and loneliness. A golden opportunity to reflect on which seeds are lying dormant and which ones do we want/need to add for planting in the Spring.

The focus this Solstice is to remember we have choices especially as this year has the potential to be highly charged emotionally with a subtle ripple effect that gathers momentum. The challenge being they can be positive emotions or negative ones with unknown consequences to ourselves and others. Working daily on being firmly grounded will pay dividends as a sense of being slightly distracted during these confusing times can lead to mishaps. Added to this is an astrological warning to watch out for being extra sensitive to substances that can unground you or heighten your reactions.

The energy may become stormy but paradoxically clarity appear at the eye of the storm and enable you to come through it successfully. Showing a talent for genuine diplomacy and doing the right thing. However for some it can take the form of a visceral desire to escape, a passionate need for freedom and independence. This may just be a daydream or a reality. Perhaps we will behave unpredictably, push against convention and boundaries.

In other words a period full of contrasts internally or externally - choices again., especially how we respond to challenges. The discipline of pausing before reactions take over is not easy but can be helped by the following:  meditating in ways that work for you, grounding walks, putting aside time for your individual spiritual practices. Having the ability to laugh at ourselves and lighten up.

The quote by Albert Camus feels very apt for this Solstice remembering we are heading towards the light and after 1st February we will have the motivation to make plans. Any turbulence during the Solstice can have the positive effect of flushing up whatever needs healing ensuring that we approach the Spring in the best way possible.
