SUMMER SOLSTICE 2013                      "To see a World in a Grain of Sand

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,

Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand

                                                                         And Eternity in an hour.”

William Blake from “Auguries of Innocence"

There is a sense this Solstice that there is a “quickening” in our intuition, however there is also a warning to be careful of magical interpretations. It is important to check our intuition out a few times before acting on it. The challenge is that our intuition may not appear to match our logic. This is the Universe’s way of getting us to make sure we are grounded and put whatever our spiritual practice is, into practice!

There is an opportunity to renew our respect for all life and to foster a healthy attitude towards life and death – a deep appreciation for the world around us. This is all the more poignant as there is a lot of water in the astrological chart, high tides and floods. During the Spring Equinox it felt steamy and slippery particularly in family relationships, this solstice is about an overwhelm of emotions around gratitude and paradoxically grief, tinged with excitement, celebration and enthusiasm – so watch out for guilt around the positive feelings.

“Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.”  Fyodor Dostoyevsky from The Brothers Karamazov

This quote underlines the important message of this Solstice for respect for oneself and others. Not only do we need to look after ourselves physically but at all levels of our being; then we can give to others more effectively. Root causes of our dis-ease(s) are staying on the surface until we are willing and able to clear them once and for all. The challenge this Solstice is not to sit on a spiritual (especially smug) cloud and be of no earthly good; this is a form of avoidance and any form of avoidance will cause more pain. The need for strategies, allies and support are vital and some unconventional friendships may also surface. Remember we are all in this together.

Being resourceful and taking care of our physical stamina is key to how we move forwards. Regardless of whether we want to or not we are collectively moving forwards. What is happening in the outside world is personal and vice versa. Reflect on your personal ambitions as opposed to power “over” others. Till the end of July take decisions slowly and allow yourself to be inspired by the mirror of creativity in all its forms. This Solstice is about surviving and flourishing and liberty – whatever that means to you.
